Questions, bug reports or ideas: [email protected]. Please tell us your device (iPhone, iPad or Mac), where you use STPZTUNE (the STPZTUNE app, AUM, GarageBand or Logic Pro), the instrument, and the STPZTUNE version.

Tune with the microphone

  1. Open STPZTUNE and allow the microphone.
  2. Play one note at a time, close to the device.
  3. Read the note name and the needle: left is flat, right is sharp. Within 3 cents the needle turns green and it says In tune.
  4. For a short note, plucked or struck, tap Hold to keep the reading.

Use STPZTUNE as an AUv3 effect

Open the STPZTUNE app once after installing it. Your device then lists it for other apps. Your sound passes through unchanged, with no latency.

AUM on iPhone and iPad

In the channel of your instrument or input, tap an empty insert slot and choose Audio Unit Extensions → STPZTUNE.

GarageBand on iPhone and iPad

  1. Select the track with your instrument.
  2. Open Track Controls → Plug-ins & EQ → Edit and tap an empty plug-in slot.
  3. Choose Audio Unit Extensions → STPZTUNE.

Logic Pro and GarageBand on Mac

In a track's audio effect slot, choose Audio Units → STPZ LAB → STPZTUNE.

Questions

Is STPZTUNE really free?

Yes. No ads, no account and no in-app purchases.

The needle doesn't move.

STPZTUNE needs the microphone. On iPhone and iPad, open Settings → STPZTUNE and turn Microphone on. On the Mac, open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone and turn STPZTUNE on.

How accurate is it?

Within ±0.5 cent on steady tones, and within ±2 cent on bowed strings with vibrato. The readout shows tenths of a cent.

Which Thai tuning does it use?

Thai mode follows the Thai Fine Arts Department table: seven equal tones with La = 417.2 Hz, named like Sol 5 (ซอล 5). Some textbooks call the 460.6 Hz note Do instead of Ti: Settings can shift the names by one step. You can also move La up or down, like A4.

My ensemble is tuned differently.

Make a Custom set with your ensemble's own seven notes: type them in, play them to the app and it remembers, or nudge each note by cents. Share it with the others as a file.

How do My instruments work?

Make an instrument with a name for every string or note. On Auto, STPZTUNE picks the instrument's nearest note and stays on it until another is clearly closer; tap a string to lock it and tune just that one. Start from an example: guitar, bass, ukulele, violin, saw duang or saw u.

What is the strobe view for?

For fine tuning: the pattern drifts left when the note is low and right when it is high, and stands still when it is in tune.

Can I tune a ranat or a khong wong?

Not yet. Bars and gongs ring with overtones that need their own way of listening; it is planned for version 1.1.

Can I use it in Thai?

Yes. Choose Thai or English in Settings.

Which devices does it run on?

iPhone and iPad with iOS / iPadOS 17 or later, and Mac with macOS 14 or later (Apple silicon and Intel). One free download for all of them.

Does it work in Ableton Live?

STPZTUNE is an AUv3 effect, and Ableton Live does not load AUv3 plug-ins. Use the STPZTUNE app, or GarageBand, Logic Pro, AUM or another AUv3 host.
