Load STPZMX as an AUv3

Open the STPZMX app once after installing it. Your iPad or Mac then lists the instrument for other apps.

GarageBand on iPad

  1. Start a new song.
  2. In the sound browser, swipe to External and tap Audio Unit Extensions.
  3. Choose STPZMX and play the keyboard. Presets are in GarageBand's preset menu and in STPZMX's own menu (tap the preset name).

AUM on iPad

  1. Tap + and choose Instrument.
  2. Under Audio Unit Extensions, choose STPZMX.
  3. Route your MIDI keyboard to it, and pick presets in AUM's preset menu.

Logic Pro for iPad

Add a Software Instrument track and choose STPZMX from the Audio Units list.

Logic Pro and GarageBand on Mac

  1. Create a Software Instrument track.
  2. In the instrument slot, choose AU Instruments → STPZ LAB → STPZMX.
  3. Logic: presets are in the box at the top of the plug-in window (it says Manual until you pick one).

Questions

I can't find STPZMX in GarageBand, AUM or Logic.

Open the STPZMX app once, then close and reopen the host app.

How do I save my own sound?

Tap or click the preset name, then Save preset…. It shows up as "User: name" in STPZMX and in your host's preset menu. To delete it, choose it, open the preset menu again and pick Delete.

How do I get my presets on both the iPad and the Mac?

Open Settings (the gear) → Presets on every device → Choose a folder in iCloud Drive…, and choose the same folder on both devices. Presets saved inside another app (GarageBand, Logic) move across the next time you open the STPZMX app.

How do I connect a Bluetooth MIDI keyboard?

In the STPZMX app: Settings → MIDI keyboard → Bluetooth MIDI…, then choose your keyboard.

Does it keep playing when I switch apps?

On the iPad, yes: the STPZMX app keeps sounding while you play it from a MIDI keyboard with another app in front.

Does STPZMX run on iPhone?

No. It is made for the iPad screen, and for the Mac.

Does it work in Ableton Live?

The App Store version is an AUv3 instrument. Ableton Live does not load AUv3 plug-ins, so use GarageBand, Logic Pro, AUM or another AUv3 host.
